Green Art Workshop 2018 Spring & Summer Programs

Short Program Workshops:

Our workshops engage students in personally relevant art projects that promote the creative re-use of everyday materials.
We offer K-12th grade, adult, and multigenerational Short Program Workshops which range in duration from from 1.5 hours to a full day. These workshops can be designed for drop-in participation or be facilitated in a more traditional class format. We customize all workshops to fit the needs of each group and can also create workshops based on a particular theme or material. Workshop fees vary according to the selected workshop, duration, and the number of participants.

UPCYCLED INSTRUMENTS
(Grades K-5 & Multigenerational, Min. 1.5 hrs.)

Tap, strum, shake, bang, and clang along with us! Make your own percussive and string instruments from household objects such as cans, bottle caps, utensils, and tools. Once assembled, we will put our sounds together to find our rhythm!

NATURAL SELECTIONS
(Grades K-12, & Adults, & Multigenerational, Min. 1.5 hrs.)

Venture outdoors and connect with the colors, textures, and patterns of our world. Inspired by your surroundings, experiment with stones, leaves, sticks and other found materials to compose your earth-based artworks. Together, we will arrange nature into abstract patterns, portraits, and more.

SPRING BREAK LAND-ESCAPES 
(Grades K-12, Adults, & Multigenerational, Min. 1.5 hrs.)

Imagine a picnic in the park, flowers blooming, and the bees buzzing. Then turn your scene of the season into a one-of-a-kind haiku book by collaging found text and imagery from magazines, books, and scrap papers. (*Please note: we also offer other seasonal versions of this program.)

LIGHT IMPRESSIONS
(Grades K-12, Adults, & Multigenerational, Min. 1.5 hrs.)

Discover how to depict your favorite moments of the spring and summer seasons through light, shadow, color, and shape. Handmade from a mason jar and other discarded objects, your glowing lantern will be a unique artwork lighting up your warm weather nights.

MUSICAL MOBILES
(Grades 3-12, Adults, & Multigenerational, Min. 1.5 hrs.)

Forage through vintage kitchen gadgets, mis-cut keys, metal scraps, and more! Then, learn how to construct a whimsical kinetic sound sculpture for a special place inside or outside your home.

PERSONALIZED PUZZLES
(Grades 3-12 & Adults, & Multigenerational, Min. 2.0 hrs.)

Design your own interactive tabletop artwork with images and text harvested from old magazines and books. Your unique collage puzzle, crafted from discarded blocks, game pieces, or puzzles, is fun to keep or give as a gift.

ITSY BITSY BEINGS
(Grades 3-12, Adults, & Mutigenerational, Min. 1.5 hrs.)

Make your own insects, microbes, plankton, and tiny sculptures of all kinds in this assemblage workshop. Discover how to upcycle, e-waste, hardware, books, and other odds and ends into real and imaginary creatures.

ECO JEWELRY
(Grades 6-12 & Adults, Min. 2.0 hrs.)

Discover how to upcycle paper, metal, and natural objects into one-of-a-kind decor and wearable art! Play with your favorite eco-friendly materials and design earrings, a pendant, necklace, or adorn existing accessories.

Residency Workshops:

Our workshops engage students in personally relevant art projects that promote the creative re-use of everyday materials.
We offer K-12th grade, adult, and multigenerational Residency Workshops which are a 1 hour minimum duration per day and generally are offered as a multiple-week workshop series. Each workshop meets grade-level appropriate Common Core standards in Visual Art & Science. We customize all workshops to fit the needs of each group and can also create workshops based on a particular theme or material. Workshop fees vary according to the selected workshop, duration, and the number of participants.

“POP-UP” HABITAT
(Grades K-8, Workshop duration varies. Multiple Sessions, Minimum 10.0 hrs.)

During this workshop residency, students will learn about an ecosystem and discuss our human impact on the specific plant and animal life that inhabit it. In each class, students will re-envision discarded materials into the flora and fauna of the ecosystem. The artworks created in this class series will develop into an onsite installation of the SF Bay, Redwood Forest, or another endangered habitat.

COMMUNITY CARTOGRAPHERS
(Grades K-12 & Adults, Minimum 2.0 hrs.)

Participants will enliven their senses as they embark on journeys through their schools, homes, and community. Through blindfolded tours, experimental drawings, and various tactile experiences, they will encounter their environment in unexpected ways. Reflecting on their sensory observations, students will create unique mixed media maps.

FIND-AND-SEEK FIBERS
(Grades K-12 & Adults, Multiple sessions. 
Minimum 6.0 hrs.) *A 2.0 hr. workshop is also available.

Students will investigate their surroundings and make connections about the landscape, manmade world, and community. Experimenting with sketching, paper-making, and collage they will create a collaborative large-scale interlocking paper “quilt”. The final piece, which represents the essence of the surrounding environment, will be crafted out of handmade recycled paper created from natural and discarded materials.

GREEN ART “CRAFTERNOONS”
(Grades K-12 & Adults, Multiple sessions.)

In this series we will investigate the obvious and more hidden elements of our natural and manmade world. We will tap into our creativity as we reduce-reuse-recycle while making unique eco-art. Possible projects include making paper, puzzles, lanterns, mobiles, itsy bitsy beings, and more!

PAPER PALATE
(Grades 3-6, Minimum 6.0 hrs.)

In this sweet and savory workshop series, students will become paper craft chefs! They will learn about different food cultures and discover techniques for sculpting paper into appetizers, entrees, desserts, and more! The program will culminate in a full course meal with students serving their creations to the other participants.

ALTERED EGOSYSTEMS
(Grades 6-12 & Adults, Minimum 3.0 hrs.)

Participants will create an intricate sculpture, journal, or scrapbook which combines elements of their everyday experience. First, they will consider their unique perspectives on home, family, community, and environment. Then they will learn ways to express these relationships in this imaginative mixed media workshop.

FRESH START
(Grades 9-12 & Adults, Minimum 12.0 hrs.)

Fresh StART is Green Art Workshop’s teacher training initiative. In this class series, participants will learn about sustainable art practices and develop related creative skills through hands-on making, brainstorming, and feedback sessions. They will then develop their own eco-conscious art curriculum and learn the best practices for sharing these techniques in their schools and communities. Upon completion of the program, teachers will be ready to inspire the next generation of green artists!
