Gaines-Jones Education Scholarships for African American 12th Grade Students

GJEF scholarship applicants must meet the following requirements:
• College-bound, African-American high school seniors from Southwest Georgia
(the counties of: Baker, Calhoun, Colquitt, Decatur, Dougherty, Early, Grady, Lee,
Miller,Mitchell, Seminole, Terrell, Thomas, or Worth) or the San Francisco Bay Area
(only the counties of: Marin, Sonoma, Contra Costa, Alameda, or San Francisco);
• Or, a prior GJEF scholarship recipient and currently enrolled undergraduate student,
applying for additional funding

Selection Criteria
The GJEF Board of Directors evaluates applications based on:
• A fully-completed GJEF application form submitted by the deadline
 (April 20th of each year)
• Clearly demonstrated need for financial aid
• Upward trend in grades and course load
• Strong personal essay, short answer, and reference letters
• Extracurricular activity and community service

Annual Scholarships Awarded
• Scholarship amount is typically $2,000 per recipient for the entire academic school year
• Scholarships are need-based and awarded at the discretion of the GJEF Board of Directors
• GJEF Scholarships do not automatically renew (scholars must re-apply each year)
• Allow six to eight weeks after submission deadline for response
• Funds are sent directly to the financial aid office of chosen college or university, typically in June
