Pathways to Medicine Summer 2015

Suture and Surgical LabSat 7/18, Sun 7/26

Join other teens passionate about exploring careers in the medical field for a fun lab that will teach you the basics of surgery and how to suture a wound. Get the opportunity to learn valuable medical skills related to surgical professions. We have recently extended this class to include the steps healthcare professionals use to clean, disinfect, and anesthetize wounds prior to surgery and suturing.

IV + Injection Lab: Sat 6/20, Sat 7/25 

Our brand new IV + Injection Lab is a one-of-a-kind medical experience for teens who are passionate about healthcare, medicine, and science. Whether you are interested in nursing and dermatology or anesthesia and surgery as possible career paths, this lab will allow you to practice and perfect the skills these professions use every day!

In this truly ground-breaking pre-med class for teens, each participant will be taught the basics of inserting and starting an IV, administering injections, collecting venous blood samples, and much more! Students will learn first-hand how healthcare practitioners deliver life-saving medicine in hospitals and clinics using IV’s and injections.

Emergency Medicine Lab: 1 day course: Sun 6/14, Sun 6/28; 2 day course: Thurs 6/18 and Friday 6/19, Tue 6/23 and Wed 6/24

This unique pre-med lab is designed to introduce teens to the exciting world of emergency medicine. Each participant will learn the life-saving medical skills EMT’s and Paramedics use to stabilize victims at the scene of serious accidents and inside ambulances. Taught by a Bay Area Fire Captain and veteran EMT/Paramedic, this workshops gives students an insider’s perspective on what it takes to work day-to-day in the field of emergency medical services.

Primary Care + The Check-Up: Sat 6/20, Sat 7/25, Tue 7/21, Thurs 7/23

One of the most critical aspects of being an effective doctor or nurse is to be able to skillfully perform a comprehensive physical exam on a patient of any age. This lab will teach you how to thoroughly evaluate a patient’s health from head to toe, inside and out using the instruments, skills, and tests  healthcare practitioners use to detect disease and keep patients healthy.
