Youth Volunteer Opportunities

Virginia Bolshakova, the new Director of UC Cooperative Extension for San Mateo & San Francisco Counties, is working on an exciting project that may interest the students. Selected high school volunteers can get up to 30 community service hours when then become 4-H Healthy Living Teen Ambassadors. (They don’t have to be 4-H members, although there are a lot of leadership, citizenship, and growth opportunities in 4-H Youth Development.)  The high school students will have fun as they teach elementary school students about gardening and nutrition. Please refer to the project website at: http://ucanr.edu/sites/smsf4h/About/4-H_Afterschool/

This site has a link to the application form, and for more information, it also has SMC 4-H Program Representative Jessica Guild’s contact number and E-mail address. The application deadline is 4/2/14.

There is another fun student activity coming up organized by UC Agriculture and Natural Resources. Students can become citizen scientists for the day and collect data about pollinators, water, and food. It is not as in-depth as a project like LiMPETS, but perhaps interested students can establish a working relationship with scientists at UC Davis. Information on this cool project is available at: http://100.ucanr.edu/Day_of_Science_and_Service/

I hope that some of your students will be interested in these opportunities.
