Pennie for Patients

Come join The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Student Series High School Program and help make the world a better place! LLS’s high school program is a nation-wide service-learning program for students to help in the fight against blood cancers while learning about leadership, finance, marketing and philanthropy. Through this community service, students learn new skills, assume responsibilities, become aware of the needs of others and learn the importance of unselfish serving and giving. Community service links students to the wider community and exposes them to people and situations outside their previous experiences. Students will have the satisfaction of knowing that they made a difference in the lives of people in our community. Every school is a winner, because every student gets a chance to make a difference in the lives of others.

How does the High School Program work?

Students collect donations over a 3 week period of your school’s choice between the dates of September 2016 – March 2017. Donations are collected from friends and family in honor of a local student blood cancer survivor. Additionally, many schools choose to implement supplemental educational activities provided by LLS, including educational assemblies and service learning materials. The donations go to benefit the Society’s mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Schools, classes, students, and coordinators are rewarded for their efforts with prizes such as classroom parties, gift cards and more!

Also, LLS supports students every step of the way! An LLS staffer will help students brainstorm ideas and develop committees to promote the campaign, process donations, and plan logistics at your program planning meeting a few months before the start of your program. And of course, LLS provides for free all the materials needed to run a successful campaign, including a program guide, collection containers, posters, etc. Your school will also receive its very own online giving page to help spread the message, and collect donations from all of your friends and family across the country!

Why should my school participate?

  • Because leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20.
  • Because more than 1,185,053 people in the United States are living with, or are in remission from blood cancers.
  • Because every three minutes, someone learns that he or she has a blood cancer.
  • Because every nine minutes, someone dies from a blood cancer.
  • Because students of all ages can learn the value of community service and make a difference in the lives of others.
