Varsity Cross Country: 2013 Championship Title Challenged

Almost 11 months after the Lick-Wilmerding Boys Cross-Country won their second straight league title, the Championship has been called into question. Last year, both the Lick-Wilmerding and Marin Academy boys finished the season with one loss. However, Lick-Wilmerding won the BCL Championship race, which was the tie-breaker–or was it?

Although there was a consensus among the coaches that the BCL championship would be the deciding race in the case of a tie, because, officially, the rule book does not specify what happens in the case of a tie, and the Championship has come into question. The league commissioner ruled that, despite a league approval of the original decision, Lick and MA would be retroactively crowned Co-Champions. Lick’s Coach, Jeff Gardiner, said, “We won fairly according to the rules of the time, and anything else is arbitrary revisionist history.” It appears that despite dissent from many of the groups involved, last year’s championship will be retroactively given to Marin Academy as well as to the original champions, Lick-Wilmerding.
