San Francisco YouthWorks (SFYW) is a unique youth internship program for 11thand 12th grade students that provides paid work experience in San Francisco City Government Departments.
Since 1997, San Francisco YouthWorks has served 10,000+ youth collectively from every neighborhood in San Francisco.
SF YouthWorks matches high school juniors and seniors with mentors in city government departments throughout San Francisco. This unique relationship allows for young people to gain paid work experience and job skills while mentors gain the necessary support in the workplace from having an intern. Each year, SF YouthWorks places 450+ youth in paid internships within San Francisco city government departments.
Interns are exposed to a variety of public service careers and begin creating a network through their mentor and workplace. Mentors are an incredible support system for our youth and are given the opportunity to refine their management, communication and task delegation skills. Mentors can request multiple interns to support them in their jobs. Each Mentor-Intern match have an SF YouthWorks Staff member assigned to case-manage and ensure a successful and productive experience for all.
Interns are paid to attend bi-weekly workshops led by their assigned SF YouthWorks Employment Coordinator. Workshops train interns in skills associated with career focused exploration, job skills and allow them to connect with other participants in the program. These sessions allow for the Employment Coordinator to build relationships with each intern to better support them in their internship and future plans.
