SFMUN is an MUN conference hosted by Lowell High School in San Francisco, California, providing a unique opportunity for students from all over to participate in a simulation of a United Nations conference. When students choose to represent the delegation of a specific country in one of the UN committees, they join an ongoing conversation revolving around relevant global issues. To participate in SFMUN is to participate in a public discourse, one exploring the possibilities of the real world, of our global community, from a distance that offers both perspective and objectivity. Taking a step into this world, during high school, offers a chance to follow current events, issues that may be unpublicized or, at first glance, unimportant, to dive into the goings on of our inextricably connected society and gain real understanding. Meet strangers you never would have had the chance to know and yet have so much in common with, and speak earnestly with them about subject matter that supersedes the everyday monotony of high school. If you’ve ever watched the politics of the world, and felt you had something to add, an idea, a plan, a solution, here is where you can realize that ambition and watch the fallout, amongst peers who can live in your imagined world alongside you. This is where the nations of your world become personal. SFMUN delegates learn to hone their public speaking skills, debate, and negotiate to craft pragmatic solutions, emulate real diplomatic procedures, and collaborate with peers. SFMUN fosters an awareness for global politics and widespread issues and allows for students to voice their perspectives on such issues in a welcoming environment. The conference is for those of all levels. Furthermore, it is a great conference for those new to MUN and for practice in general due to the fact that there are 4 novice/learning committees. There is a total of 9 committees: 4 novice, 3 intermediate, and 2 advanced (1 being a crisis). SFMUN— where you can shape our world.
