What is Breakthrough San Francisco?
Breakthrough San Francisco at SF Day School fosters educational equity through an innovative, two-pronged approach. We provide intensive academic enrichment and ongoing support to motivated students with limited educational opportunities, ensuring they are academically successful and on the path to college. Simultaneously, we train outstanding high school and college students from across the country for work as tomorrow’s teachers and urban educational leaders.
1. Volunteer Leadership Program
Description: “VLPs” contribute in many ways to the success of our intensive summer program. They decorate the school, help out in classes, assist with lunch service and special events, tutor in our after-school program, and much more. They also attend workshops about college, professionalism, and other topics relevant to their future success.
Commitment: Five days per week (11:00am-5:30pm, Mon-Fri) throughout the six-week summer program (June 23-August 1). In addition, VLPs must attend training week (June 16 – June 20).
2. Summer Tutoring
Description: Provide tutoring to a small group of Breakthrough students, helping them complete homework assignments and deepen their understanding of academic concepts – all while building a meaningful relationship.
Commitment: One hour per week (4:30pm-5:30pm on a Mon, Tue, Wed, or Thu afternoon) throughout the six-week summer program (June 23-July 31), although volunteers are welcome to tutor more than once a week. All tutors must also attend the mandatory Tutor Training on June 5 from 5:00pm-8:00pm.
