According to the U.S. Department of Education, almost 90% of children in low-income households are reading below grade level in California but you can help to decrease that achievement gap!
Reading Partners, a literacy non-profit fighting the achievement gap, is looking for high school students (or even people not in high school) committed to working with elementary school students reading 6 months to 2.5 years below grade level. All tutoring sessions are done one-on-one with a structured curriculum and the guidance of a full time staff member running the program on site. No previous experience is needed and Reading Partners provides all training. The time commitment is 45 minutes, one day per week for a semester.
Find out what elementary schools Reading Partners works with and sign up to volunteer by visiting www.readingpartners.org. Their priority sites are currently Daniel Webster Elementary (Potrero Hill), Leonard Flynn (Mission) and Bret Harte Elementary (Bayview). If you can’t commit at this time, please spread the word!
